UK City of Culture is a competition run by the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) every four years.
Previous winners are Derry/Londonderry in 2013 and Hull in 2017, with both experiencing a massive boost in tourism in their year in the spotlight, as people travelled to visit the incredible events organised to celebrate in these cities. The title also prompted a challenge to keep the progress going with a ‘what can we do next’ attitude.
Coventry was announced as the next UK City of Culture on Thursday 7 December 2017 on the BBC’s The One Show, fighting off fierce competition from Paisley, Stoke, Sunderland and Swansea, and the year as UK City of Culture starts in May 2021.
